ASTM D4054 was drafted primarily to enable the industry to evaluate and approve synthetic fuels. However the standard practice did include a number of paragraphs for the evaluation and approval of new additives. Effort was initiated to streamline and describe the type of testing required to evaluate the different types of additives (AO, MDA, SDA, CI/LI, and new additive / chemistry types). The additives were to be evaluated for impact on physical properties of the fuel and compatibility with materials of construction of system components. The additive was also to be evaluated for “Performance for its Intended Function” and “Compatibility” (i.e. no harm to other approved additives).
