New Practice for Specimen Reconstitution Methods for Geotechnical Laboratory Testing of Soils

1. Scope

This practice covers the reconstitution and compaction methodologies and their respective quality control procedure for the preparation of representative soil specimens for geotechnical laboratory tests.

Keywords

reconstitution; compaction; quality control; moist tamping; slurry deposition; laboratory test; soil; triaxial; direct shear; cyclic

Rationale

On many occasions retrieving an intact specimen is not possible. A lot of design decisions are made based on the tests conducted on reconstituted specimens. This standard aims to standardize the reconstitution procedure for some of the most widely used methods, explain each method’s applicability and limitations and establish quality control mechanisms for each method.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
