New Guide for Additive manufacturing -- Design -- Vat Photopolymerization

1. Scope

This guide proposal proposes a new task on design for vat photopolymer processes in the ASTM F42.04 design subcommittee. Based on the more general ISO/ASTM “Standard Practice/Guide for Design for Additive Manufacturing”, this work is specifically dedicated to vat photopolymer (VPP) processes. Under this framework, several process-specific design guidelines have been developed on polymer and metal powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and material extrusion. This proposal adds another process to the suite of design guides offered by ASTM. It will cover macro-scale VPP processes including laser-scanning and mask projection process variants. Both top-down and bottom-up mask projection configurations will be covered, along with commercially available variations of these approaches. 2-photon VPP will not be included, nor will processes that extrude or jet photopolymers.

Rationale

This new work item proposal addresses one of the AMSC roadmap gaps on process-specific design guides. In the case of VPP and AM in general, design and manufacturing engineers only have a limited pool of experience. Without the limitations associated with conventional processes, the use of VPP offers designers and manufacturers a high degree of freedom and this requires an understanding about the possibilities and limitations of the process. The proposed guide provides support to technology users, such as design and production engineers, when designing parts that need to be manufactured by means of VPP. It will help practitioners to explore the benefits of VPP processes and to recognize the process-related limitations when designing parts.
