Revision of E1820-21 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fracture Toughness
Rationale
Section 6.5.2.2 of E1820-21 states: "The critical tolerances and suggested proportions of the clevis and pins are given in Fig. 5." However, Fig. 5 does not contain any provisions/recommendation for the loading pins, nor does it provide tolerances. Therefore, Fig. 5 has been revised as follows:
a) The format of the numbers has been changed from ".XXX" to "0.XXX" (editorial).
b) Tolerances for the critical dimensions have been added (consistent with the tolerances in E399-20a, Fig. A2.2).
c) The surface finish of the loading flats, previously expressed in microinches (63), has been changed to microns (1.6), with Note 1 providing the equivalence to microinches.
d) Note 2 now provides recommendations for the pin diameter and tolerance (consistent with E399-20a).
e) An additional Note (Note 4), addressing the consequences of deviating from the recommended configuration, has been added (consistent with E399-20a).
In addition, a couple of editorial changes have been made to the content of section 6.5.2.2, below Fig. 5.
