New Specification for Wrought Nickel-Titanium Based Shape Memory Alloys for Actuation

1. Scope

This specification covers the chemical, physical, mechanical, and metallurgical requirements for wrought nickel-titanium based bar, flat rolled products, and tubes used for shape memory actuation materials and devices. Nickel-titanium based material generally meaning wholly made of Nickel-titanium (NiTi) or Nickel, titanium, and additional alloying elements (NiTiX).

Rationale

While there exists a broad range of potential applications for Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators, their transition to production is hindered by a lack of accepted industry and regulatory testing and certification standard. In addition to the recently published ASTM standards (E3097 and E3098) that describe test methods to evaluate actuator and shape memory effect properties, a material specification that evaluates and controls the wrought material is needed. This specification intends to cover the chemical, physical, mechanical, and metallurgical requirements for wrought nickel-titanium based bar, flat rolled products, and tubes used for shape memory actuation materials and devices. Nickel-titanium based material generally meaning wholly made of Nickel-titanium (NiTi) or Nickel, titanium, and additional alloying elements (NiTi-X).

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
