New Test Method for Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Water Using Porous Selective Polymer (PSP) Extraction Devices and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)

1. Scope

1.1 This test method describes the analytical protocol for determination of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in various water matrices including drinking water, surface water, wastewater influent and effluent, and marine water by extraction using porous selective polymer (PSP) devices followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. 1.2 Ultra-trace concentration of nanogram per litre to microgram per litre of PAHs compound are extracted precisely and accurately in water using PSP devices following desorption in a small amount of solvent (0.2 mL) and then injection into GC/MS instrument. 1.3 Not all the PAH compounds (including EU regulated PAHs) that can be analyzed with this PSP device are addressed here. The applicability of the PSP device for the other PAH compounds should be tested before use. 1.4 Matrix-matched calibration curves obtained in synthetic water matrices can be used to analyze any water samples without requiring standard addition. 1.5 Units--The values are stated in SI unit are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Rationale

The need of analyzing trace concentration of pollutants in water samples has initiated the introduction of various products with different associated methods in the sample preparation market. However, there is still a need for a reliable and user-friendly extraction device that can tolerate different matrices and does not need specific apparatus, which complicates the laboratory process. PSP extraction device provides a reliable method that has been engineered to facilitate the water sample extraction process. To introduce this product to the sample preparation market, the associated method needs to be approved through a regulatory agency to be validated to be used in commercial environmental laboratories. The users of this standard are the analysts who are working in environmental laboratories and need to analyze PAHs in water samples.
