Proving Paternity—Human Leukocyte Antigen Test

CODEN: JFSCAS

Abstract

The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) blood test is based on antigens (a substance that will stimulate the production of antibodies) found on the white blood cells. Because antigens are produced by genes, any HLA found in a child must be present in either parent. Thus, the HLA system of the blood of the child, mother, and putative father are tested and the probability of paternity is calculated. The HLA polymorphic genetic system is extremely powerful in determining the probability of paternity.
