Environmental Sensitivity of Epoxies

A number of laboratory and field studies have indicated that the combined effects of sorbed moisture and thermal environment can cause significant changes in the mechanical response of epoxy composites and adhesives. The increasing use of these materials in extreme environments requires a greater understanding of their durability. However, the long-term, in-service durability of epoxy adhesives and composites is uncertain primarily because (1) long-term, in-service aging conditions are difficult to simulate by short-term laboratory or field tests, and (2) the basic phenomena responsible for changes in the mechanical response of the epoxies themselves in laboratory-simulated service environments have not all been identified or understood.
