This course provides a brief overview of ASTM E2091 Standard Guide for Use of Activity and Use Limitations, Including Institutional and Engineering Controls. Through this course you will be able to Recognize when and how Activity and Use limitations (AULs) can be integrated into Risk-Based Corrective Action at sites where residual chemicals of concern may remain on-site due to geographic, geologic, or technological constraints.

  • Identify when in the site remediation process AULs should be considered and evaluated
  • Identify both near-term and long-term costs and benefits of activity and use limitations
  • Identify technical policy decisions that a regulatory agency be required to develop

About the Instructor

Paul Sonnenfeld is the chair of E50.05 on Environmental Risk Management and chaired the task group that revised ASTM E2091 in 2019 and 2022.

Paul Sonnenfeld is a highly-skilled, hands-on safety, health, and environmental professional with over 25 years of experience in occupational health and safety; heavy construction safety; industrial hygiene; employee training; environmental compliance and permitting (RCRA, CAA, CWA, TSCA); environmental management systems; ISO 14001 audits; site assessment, characterization and remediation (CERCLA, RCRA CA, and VCP); ecological risk assessment; and negotiating with federal and state regulatory agencies.
