    In light of rising concerns about the spread of COVID-19 and calls to contain the virus, ASTM will be offering this in-person training as a live streamed virtual event.


    About the Course

    This 12-hour virtual course spread over three consecutive days covers the basics of degradability and biodegradability, including the differences and similarities between them. Topics covered include definitions, test methods and specifications, certification agencies and their requirements and claim requirements in the US.


    Learning Outcomes

    By the end of this course you will be able to:

    • Define and differentiate between degradability and biodegradability
    • Know the different types of biodegradability
    • Provide the details on pertinent ASTM, ISO and EN standards
    • Understand the differences between the standards
    • Know the basics of the test methods
    • Understand the requirements for certification
    • Understand the rules for biodegradability claims in the US

    About the Instructor

    Kelvin Okamoto is President of Green Bottom Line, which focuses on sustainable materials and packaging development, commercialization, testing and certification. Kelvin has 30+ years of industrial experience. Kelvin is also founder and CEO of Gen3Bio, a startup focused on producing biobased chemicals and bioplastics from algae. Kelvin has a Ph.D. Chemistry from Cornell and a B.S. Chemistry from Stanford. Kelvin is chair of the ASTM D20.96 subcommittee on Environmentally Degradable Plastics and Biobased Products that sets the standards for biodegradation and for biobased content; Kelvin is also Vice Chair- Products for D20 Plastics committee.
