Abstract

The acoustic emissions emitted from a 17-4 PH stainless steel were monitored while the specimen was undergoing fatigue testing in the torsional mode. Below the cyclical stress sensitivity limit (CSSL) of the material no abnormal emissions were detected, while at and above CSSL emissions were detected which could be attributed to fatigue damage which resulted in failure of the specimen. This test was the first in a series which will enable us to learn more about fatigue damage in various materials.
