Consultant Thomas D. Murphy of Morristown, N.J., has received the Frank W. Reinhart from the ASTM International Committee on Standards in recognition of his outstanding leadership and service in the area of terminology standardization.

An ASTM International member since 1980, Murphy serves on Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics, where he is active on several subcommittees and chairs E11.30 on Statistical Quality Control.  He has served as chair, vice chair and secretary of E11 and received the ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow in 1997.  He also works on Committees E35 on Pesticides and Alternative Control Agents and E55 on Manufacture of Pharmaceutical Products.

Before starting T.D. Murphy Statistical Consulting LLC in 1995, Murphy spent more than 25 years working in statistics/quality control and chemical research and development at Hercules Inc. and American Cyanamid Co. at various locations in the U.S. As a private consultant, he does statistical work for the chemical, consumer products and pharmaceutical industries and has taught college-level statistics courses.

In addition to ASTM International, Murphy is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Society for Quality and the American Statistical Association.  He holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, Md., and an M.S. in statistics from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.
