ASTM International’s consumer products committee (F15) has approved a new standard for wearable sleep products worn by infants and toddlers (F3735). Wearable sleep products are defined as products made of fabric intended to function as a bedding substitute by providing thermal insulation, containment, or both during sleep. It is intended to be worn over daywear or sleepwear and may have arm or leg openings, or both, including, but not limited to, sleep bags, swaddle products, and sleep suits.
This new specification was developed to address incidents associated with these products as identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The standard attempts to minimize the hazards such as suffocation, strangulation, and choking. It establishes performance requirements, test methods, and labeling requirements to promote the safe use of infant garments with swaddling feature(s) and wearable sleep products worn over daywear or sleepwear as a bedding substitute, intended for infants and toddlers up to two years of age.
This specification does not apply to loose blankets intended for covering infants or toddlers, loose swaddle blankets, step-in blankets (for example, a mermaid tail covering) that cover only infant’s or toddler’s feet and/or legs, or sleep products designed for camping or outdoor use.
ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Join ASTM.
