Dr. Viacheslav N. Shishov, senior researcher at A. A. Bochvar All-Russia Research Institute of Inorganic Materials (VNIINM) in Moscow, Russia, has been awarded the William J. Kroll Zirconium Medal from ASTM International Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys.

The William J. Kroll Zirconium Medal recognizes outstanding achievement in the scientific, technological or commercial aspects of zirconium production and utilization, and encourages future efforts, studies and research.  Shishov received the Kroll Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the understanding and significance of irradiation-induced microstructural changes in Zr-Nb alloys used in nuclear reactors.

Shishov joined VNIINM as an engineer in 1972 after receiving a bachelor’s degree in materials science from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute.  VNIINM develops technologies of production of fuel assemblies for nuclear reactors. One of the key aspects of the institute’s work is fundamentally oriented research aimed at creating prerequisites for further development of nuclear science and engineering. He was promoted to scientist in 1986 and senior researcher in 1995.

Shishov is a member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences.  He was awarded his Ph.D. in materials science from VNIINM in 1984.
