ASTM International Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials has presented the John L. Hague Award to John R.  Sieber, Ph.D., research chemist in the Material Measurement Laboratory, Chemical Sciences Division, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Md.

The Hague Award is given in recognition of significant and technical contributions relative to the initiation, preparation or development of standards for testing metals and ores. A member of ASTM International since 2000, Sieber is active on both Committee E01 and F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials. He received the E01 B.F. Scribner Award in 2005.

Sieber specializes in analytical chemistry, specifically X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and the development of certified reference materials. Prior to joining NIST in 1997, he was a senior research chemist at Texaco Inc. and before that a research chemist at the National Bureau of Standards.

Outside ASTM International, Sieber is a member of the American Chemical Society. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Pa., and holds a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park, Md.
