All interested parties are invited to participate in the standards developing activities of Subcommittee E07.11 on Digital Imaging and Communication in Nondestructive Evaluation (DICONDE), part of ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. The subcommittee is focusing on developing standards that test the interoperability of DICONDE-compliant inspection equipment.
DICONDE standards were developed for nondestructive inspection equipment manufacturers to facilitate the exchange of data and future access to records in the event of a system failure. DICONDE data store not only inspection results but also the important metadata about how an inspection was performed in one digital record.
“This allows critical inspection results from the aerospace, nuclear and infrastructure industries to be accessed years after the inspection for health monitoring of a component,” says Patrick Howard, principal engineer for nondestructive testing, GE Aviation. “Such information can be used to evaluate if the component can continue in service or analysis in the event of a failure.”
Bridges, airplanes, motor vehicles and power plants are among the structures that have been nondestructively inspected and had data stored in the DICONDE standard format.
In 2013, Subcommittee E07.11 approved a new standard, ASTM E2934, Practice for Digital Imaging and Communication in Nondestructive Evaluation (DICONDE) for Eddy Current (EC) Test Methods. The subcommittee is currently revising several standards and is in the process of developing a proposed new standard, WK38108, Guide for the Validation Testing of DICONDE Data Objects.
