Alex T.C. Lau, president of TCL Consulting in Ontario, Canada, has received the Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement from ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants.

Lau is chairman of the Coordinating Subcommittee on Quality Assurance and Statistics (D02.94), vice chairman of Subcommittee D02.25 on Performance Assessment and Validation of Process Stream Analyzer Systems, and chairs the group on Precision within D02.01 on Combustion Characteristics. Committee D02 presented Lau with ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities, the Award of Merit, in 2008, and he has received the D02 Award of Excellence three times. An ASTM member since 1991, Lau also serves on Committees E11 on Statistics and E36 on Accreditation and Certification.

A graduate of the University of Toronto where he received a bachelor’s degree in applied science and engineering physics, Lau joined the Steel Company of Canada in 1974 as an automation and analytical instrumental design specialist. He went on to hold various technical, statistical and quality assurance specialist roles at Imperial Oil and ExxonMobil before retiring in 2011. A specialist in process analytics engineering, operations and statistical engineering as well as quality assurance and standardization for the measurement and manufacture of fuels, Lau continues to offer technical consultation services through his company TCL Consulting.

Outside ASTM International, Lau is a member of the American Society for Quality and the Professional Engineers of Ontario. He is an ASQ certified quality engineer and a registered professional engineer in Ontario.
