ASTM International’s bathtub and shower structures subcommittee (F15.03) has approved the formation of a new task group that will develop a proposed safety standard (WK98447) for adult shower chairs and stools. The subcommittee is part of ASTM’s consumer products committee (F15).
The task group will work on the development of a standard for evaluating the structural strength of chairs and stools designed for use in bathtubs and showers, including portable chairs/stools. All interested stakeholders, particularly manufacturers, are invited to participate in the development of this proposed standard.
The standard is being developed to address reported incidents involving injuries from shower chairs and stools breaking during use. The proposed standard will allow companies to offer safer products and still be on an equal footing with their competition.
ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. JOIN ASTM.
