ASTM International Honors Irving Scher with Top Annual Award

He was recognized for his research and contributions in the field of winter sports safety, which stretch abroad into other countries and organizations.

ASTM International presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Irving Scher for his contributions to its snow and water sports committee (F27).

The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities. An ASTM International member since 1999, Scher has been previously awarded with Board of Directors Service Award (2019) and the F27 Outgoing Chair Award (2019). He served on ASTM’s board of directors from 2016 to 2019, and was chair of F27 for five years.

Scher currently works as principal biomechanical engineer at Guidance Engineering and Applied Research, with extensive experience in improving safety and injury prevention in sports, recreation, and transportation. He was recognized for his research and contributions in the field of winter sports safety, which stretch abroad into other countries and organizations.

Beyond ASTM, Scher is also a member of the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI), the International Society for Snowsports Safety, the International Standards Organization (ISO), and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He earned his bachelor of science (1995) in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and his master of science (1998) and doctoral (2000) degrees in mechanical and biomechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
