Daniel Stuart, a graduate student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Davis, has won the 2009 Student Paper Award sponsored by ASTM International Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture. 

The E08 Student Paper Award is given to encourage students to develop, present and publish high quality research papers in the field of fracture and subcritical growth. The award is presented annually at the committee’s meetings held during the ASTM November Committee Week. Participating students and advisors are invited to attend the meetings and make their presentations for judging by the committee. This year’s meetings were held in Atlanta, Ga.

Stuart’s winning research paper is titled “Evaluation of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics with Superposition for Predictions of Fatigue Crack Growth in Thin Cold-expanded Open-hole Coupons,” and focuses on evaluating a crack growth model against experimental results.

As part of his graduate studies at UC Davis, Stuart is working on a joint research project with Hill Engineering LLC, Mississippi State University, the Federal Aviation Administration and Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. for creating analytical design tools for the inclusion of residual stress effects in damage tolerant design of rotorcraft. 

Stuart earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from UC Davis in 2006. Apart from his studies, he is an active member of the UC Davis cycling team, which won the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championship this year.
