Haibin Ning, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the     Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has received the 2013 Professor of the Year Award from ASTM International. The ASTM Professor of the Year Award recognizes and rewards the contributions of educators in developing students’ understanding of standards.

A popular and enthusiastic educator, Ning works to consistently expose his undergraduate and graduate students to ASTM International standards in lectures, assignments and lab work, in addition to using standards in his own research. He joined ASTM Committee D30 on Composite Materials in 2012, and has since proposed a new carbon fiber content measurement procedure to complement ASTM D3171, Standard Test Methods for Constituent Content of Composite Materials.

Ning received his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Alabama, and holds a master’s degree in materials science from Guangxi University and a bachelor’s degree in materials engineering from Central South University, both in China. In addition to teaching courses in materials characterization and testing, manufacturing processes and finite element analysis, he manages the operation of the advanced materials testing and processing laboratory at the university and conducts research on fiber reinforced composite materials. He has worked on several federal, state and industry sponsored projects, and has been instrumental in the completion of applications related to mass transit, aviation defense components, sports equipment, personal protection and more.

Today, there are over 5,000 ASTM student members from more than 70 countries who take advantage of the opportunity to be involved with ASTM while completing their undergraduate and graduate degrees.
