In recent weeks, members of the ASTM International subcommittee on infant inclined sleep products – represented by government, consumer advocacy groups, and industry – have been actively discussing safety concerns related to products that claim to meet the voluntary consensus standard: “consumer safety specification for infant inclined sleep products” (F3118).

Subcommittee members met May 8 as one of several scheduled juvenile-products standards development meetings this week at ASTM International’s global headquarters near Philadelphia.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission – which is active on ASTM International committees – recently wrote a letter to the subcommittee stating that the agency believes “warnings alone are insufficient to address the serious hazards posed by infant inclined sleep products” and that the agency would be “prepared to work with the subcommittee to reevaluate the standard in its entirety so that the hazards are fully addressed.”

As a result of the May 8 meeting, the subcommittee tabled the current proposed revisions to the voluntary consensus standard in favor of potentially making larger revisions to the standard.

ASTM International and its staff provide convening support for standards development activities that are determined and led by the organization’s 30,000 global members, who are volunteers and technical experts.
