Peter Lane, president and CEO of Applied Fabric Technologies Inc. in Orchard Park, N.Y., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee F20 on Hazardous Substances and Oil Spill Response. The Award of Merit is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.
A member of ASTM International since 1979, Lane is currently serving his third term as chairman of Committee F20; he first chaired the committee from 1998-2004. He is also secretary of Subcommittee F20.11 on Control and chair of F20.94 on Long Range Planning and Coordination. He has played a key role in the development of several F20 standards related to oil spill containment booms.
Lane, who has worked in the oil spill control industry for more than 43 years, has a wealth of experience in the management of oil spills, from routine harbor operations to major disasters. Since 1979, Lane has been responsible for the management of oil spill equipment sales and manufacturing, first for Albany International, which was reorganized as Globe International in 1983, and then for Applied Fabric Technologies (AFTI), which Lane started in 1988 from the Specialty Products Division of Globe International. In 2008, AFTI merged with DESMI Ro-Clean to become one of the largest manufacturers of oil spill control equipment in the world.
A graduate of the University of Oklahoma where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Lane holds an MBA from the University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, Conn. He has provided training to various groups, including the U.S. Navy in Okinawa, Sasebo and Yokosuka, Japan, and in several U.S. locations, in support of spill control equipment provided by AFTI. He has designed and supervised the installation of hundreds of oil spill containment and recovery installations, including several offshore boom systems for exploration activities.
A member of Rotary International and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Lane holds an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with instrument and multi-engine ratings, as well as an Open Water Diver Certification from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
