ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing has approved a new standard that can be used for the same applications as the now-cancelled MIL-STD-2154, Process for Inspection, Ultrasonic, Wrought Metals. The new standard, E 2375, Practice for Ultrasonic Examination of Wrought Products, is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee E07.06 on Ultrasonic Testing Procedures.

Practice E 2375 establishes the minimum requirements for ultrasonic examination of wrought products. “The procedures and requirements detailed are often applied to the quality determination of bars of various cross-sectional shape and heavy wall tubes and pipes that may be used for aerospace or other applications where material quality is critical,” says Kenneth Beck, chairman and level III supervisor, TAC Technical Instrument Corporation.

In addition to including updated material that had appeared in MIL-STD-2154, ASTM E 2375 includes new appendices that detail requirements of examination reports, gain control and attenuator calibration, and linearity checks and methods for estimating the length of linear discontinuities.

Beck says that all interested parties are invited to participate in future revisions of E 2375, as well as in other standards developing activities of Subcommittee E07.06. ASTM International standards are available from Customer Service (phone: 610/832-9585; https://www.astm.org/contact/) or at www.astm.org.
