Marilyn L. Baker, senior innovation consultant in global quality for The Coca-Cola Co. in Atlanta, Ga., has been elected a member of the ASTM International board of directors for 2010-2012.

At Coca-Cola, Baker is responsible for packaging governance and innovation issues for flexible, fountain, food service and concentrate packaging. She also oversees new package and package material authorizations with an emphasis on hazardous materials transport requirements, flexible packaging and policy development.

In her career, which includes more than 29 years of experience with The Coca-Cola Co., Baker has worked in such packaging technology areas as plastic closure development and returnable plastic bottles. She was the team leader at Coca-Cola in obtaining U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for recycled content food-contact packaging in the United States. She has also worked on plastics recycling in Europe and Asia.

Baker joined ASTM International in 2006. She serves on Committees D10 on Packaging, E60 on Sustainability and F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging, and on a number of D10 and F02 groups. She is chair of Subcommittee D10.19 on Sustainability and Recycling and of Subcommittee F02.15 on Chemical/Safety Properties. She also is or has been a member of several professional societies, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; the Institute of Packaging Professionals; the Society of Plastics Engineers, where she has been serving on the Flexible Packaging board of directors; the Society of Women Engineers and Women in Packaging.

A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn., where she earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering, Baker has certifications in project management and communications. She also has quality certifications, including lead auditor certification for ISO 9001, Quality Management Systems – Requirements. In 2007, Baker was honored with a 2007 All-Star in Technology Award from Women of Color in Science, Math, Technology and Engineering.
