ASTM International Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants has given the 2005 Sealants Hall of Fame Award to Lawrence D. Carbary, associate industry scientist/construction industry, for Dow Corning Corp. in Midland, Mich., where he also resides. C24 cited Carbary "for distinguished service in the stimulation of research, promotion of knowledge and service to the building industry in the area of voluntary standardization."

An ASTM International member since 1999, Carbary serves on Committees C14 on Glass and Glass Products as well as C24, where he is chair of two subcommittees, C24.30 on Adhesion and E24.87 on International Standards. He is also chair of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) TC59/SC 8 on building sealants.

Carbary has worked for Dow Corning Corporation for 23 years, since his graduation from Michigan Technological University with a B.S. in chemical engineering. He works on the development and application of silicone adhesives, sealants and coatings used in the global commercial construction business. When he first joined Dow Corning, he worked on developing one and two part silicone sealants. He opened the firm's first regional testing laboratory in California, and he relocated to South Korea for three years to build a service team there as part of the Dow Corning Construction technical staff before assuming his current position.

Carbary has written and presented on the topics of curtainwall sealing, aesthetic considerations and restoration for ASTM International and for construction trade journals. He has also been an active member of the Sealant Waterproofing and Restoration Institute and has been a member of the institute's board of directors.
