ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has presented the Award of Merit to Kevin J. Bly, senior chemist at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co. in Annandale, N.J. The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

Bly is vice chairman of Subcommittees D02.05 on Properties of Fuels, Petroleum Coke and Carbon Material and D02.08 on Volatility and secretary of D02.03 on Elemental Analysis. He also serves as section chair of the groups on Color and Reactivity (D02.05.0C) and Vapor Pressure and V/L Ratio (D02.08.OD), and as working group chair for ASTM D381, Standard Test Method for Gum Content in Fuels by Jet Evaporation. He has received the D02 Award of Excellence three times (1999, 2002 and 2009). A member of ASTM International since 1991, Bly also received a D02 Award of Appreciation in 2004.

A graduate of the State University of New York, Stony Brook, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering chemistry, Bly joined ExxonMobil in 1987 as a senior research technician. He became associate research chemist in 1990 and senior chemist in 2002. He has authored or co-authored several in-house proprietary analytical methods at ExxonMobil.

In addition to ASTM International, Bly is a member of the American Chemical Society. He holds a master’s in materials science and engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
