ASTM International presented its top annual award – the 2023 Award of Merit – to Ronald Kelly for his contributions to its forensic sciences committee (E30).
The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities. Kelly was recognized for his long-time leadership, his consistent education and mentoring of newer members, and his ability to reconcile members’ vastly different positions to help standards move forward.
An ASTM International member since 1997, Kelly has previously been honored by the committee with the Forensic Sciences Award (2016) and two Awards of Appreciation (2017, 2019).
Kelly’s career concentrations are forensic chemistry and fire and explosives investigation. Since 2015, he has worked as a self-employed forensic consultant, after several decades working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Laboratory Division. In addition to ASTM, he is a member of International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS).
Kelly received his bachelor of science in chemistry from University of Maryland in 1977.
