ASTM International’s plastic piping systems committee (F17) has presented its 2025 Robert D. Thompson Memorial Award to Jim Mason, retired consulting polymer scientist.
The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities. Mason was recognized for his mentorship of new members, his promotion of ASTM standards, and for excellent leadership as an officer in subcommittee F17.68 for over a decade.
A member of ASTM International since 2004, Mason has previously been awarded by the committee with the Paul Fin Award (2023) and the Special Service Awards (2016, 2019).
Mason’s career focus is polymer science, a field in which he has 43 years of experience. He is now retired, but most recently worked at Mason Materials Development LLC. Previously, he worked in polymers at various companies such as Arkema, Inc. and Beta Physics, Inc. In addition to ASTM, he is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Mason earned his bachelor of arts in chemistry from the State University of New York at Potsdam (1979).
