Gary J. Maylon, president of Metal Lath and Stucco Consulting Co. Inc. in Talladega, Ala., will receive the ASTM Award of Merit and title of fellow from ASTM International Committee C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems. The Award of Merit is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

A member of ASTM International and Committee C11 since 1990, Maylon was cited for his contributions to the development of standards related to stucco products and their installation. He has been the task group chairman and a major technical contributor to ASTM C1063, Standard Specification for Installation of Lathing and Furring to Receive Interior and Exterior Portland Cement-Based Plaster, for more than 20 years. C11 has recognized him in the past with the Award of Appreciation in 1999 and 2010. In addition to his work with C11, Maylon also serves on Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings.

A graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, La., Maylon has worked in the stucco industry for more than 35 years. He spent 28 years at Alabama Metal Industries Corp. (AMICO) in Birmingham, Ala., where he worked as technical services manager for the Construction Products Division, and as corporate manager of technical services and new product management and loss prevention. In 2004, he retired from AMICO and started his consulting company. 

The author of “The Metal Lath Handbook, A Guide to Products and Installation, and Their Relationship to Portland Cement Stucco,” which was published in 2002, Maylon has authored more than a dozen technical articles that have appeared in various trade publications and he holds seven industry-related patents. He is a longtime member of the Construction Specifications Institute, a past chairman of the Metal Lath Division of the Metal Lath/Steel Framing Association, a past chairman of the Technical Executive Committee and the Steel Framing Technical Committee of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry (AWCI), and he served on the ACWI board of directors.
