A 2005 ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow were given to Eugene T. Camponeschi, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., a senior engineer at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, in West Bethesda, Md., for his leadership and contributions to ASTM International Committee D30 on Composite Materials. Committee D30 cited Camponeschi for outstanding leadership and technical contributions as member-at-large, vice chairman, and chairman of Committee D30. The award is the highest Society recognition of individuals for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities.

Camponeschi lives in Severna Park, Md.

An ASTM International member since 1983, Camponeschi is chair of Subcommittee D30.02 on Research and Mechanics and works on several D30 subcommittees. He has been chair of the D30 main committee as well as committee vice chair; he has served as editor of an ASTM Special Technical Publication on composite materials testing and design; and he has mentored many D30 members on drafting standards. In addition, Camponeschi is a member of ASTM Committee D20 on Plastics.

For his contributions to D30 and to ASTM International, Camponeschi previously has been recognized with a D30 Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and a D30 Certificate of Appreciation in 1992.

Camponeschi currently manages U.S. Navy programs for ship structures, and he focuses on marine composite materials and assemblies. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in engineering science and mechanics from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Delaware.
