ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has presented the George V. Dyroff Award of Honorary Committee Membership to Robert Furey, Ph.D., a consultant based in North Canton, Ohio.
The Dyroff Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of petroleum products and lubricants and significant contributions in one or more of the following areas: analytic methods, physical testing methods, performance testing methods, specifications, theory and standardization administration or coordination.
A member of ASTM and Committee D02 since 1979, Furey works on several D02 subcommittees. Committee D02 has honored his contributions with the Award of Merit and title of fellow, ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities, in 2005, and the Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement in 1995.
Furey began his professional career at General Motors in Warren, Mich., in 1969. During his tenure at GM, he held various fuels research and development positions, eventually being named manager, gasoline fuel systems section, and principal research scientist. In 1998, he moved to General Motors Powertrain in Pontiac, Mich., where he served as fuels group leader. A specialist in effects of fuel properties, composition and additives on vehicle emissions, performance and durability, Furey established his consulting companies Furey & Associates LLC in 2005 and Furey Fuels Consulting LLC in 2011.
Outside ASTM International, Furey is a member of the American Chemical Society and SAE International. He holds a doctorate in organic chemistry and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio.
