Mikhail Sokolov, Ph.D., senior research staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Materials Science and Technology Division, Oak Ridge, Tenn., has received the Award of Merit from ASTM International. The award, which includes the honorary title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual offerings to standards activities. 

Sokolov was honored for his contributions to successful symposia for Committee E10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications and for his work on transition range fracture toughness standards for Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture. He has chaired the E10 task group on Small Specimen Test Techniques since 1999 and received an E10 Award of Appreciation in 2002. Sokolov began participating in ASTM activities in 1993 and officially joined the Society in 1998. He has chaired several E10 symposia and is the primary editor of two resulting ASTM Special Technical Publications (STPs) on Small Specimen Test Techniques and co-editor of a recent STP on Effects of Radiation on Nuclear Materials.

One of the leading researchers in the field of effects of radiation on mechanical properties and fracture toughness of structural materials for nuclear applications, Sokolov worked as a research and development staff member at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy in Moscow and as an adjunct professor at the Moscow State Engineering Physics Institute before joining Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1992 as a visiting scientist. He became a permanent senior research staff member in 1997, and is the principal investigator for the Fracture Mechanics Lab at ORNL.

Sokolov is also a member of ASME International. He holds a master’s degree in materials science from the Moscow State Engineering Physics Institute and a doctorate in technical science from Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy.
