Kent Jason Lowry, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at Northland Orthopedic Associates, part of Ministry Healthcare in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, is a recipient of the 2015 ASTM International President’s Leadership Award.

The President’s Leadership Award recognizes individuals early in their ASTM career who have significantly advanced the Society’s mission through extraordinary accomplishment, example and vision. It is presented annually to two deserving ASTM members. This year’s other recipient is Jane La Goy, technical services manager at Bodycote in Andover, Massachusetts.

Lowry has been an active member of ASTM Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices since 2008. His many contributions include chairing the task group that developed an important new industry standard for labeling of orthopedic implants used in joint arthroplasty. Lowry also serves as vice chairman of the Subcommittee on Classification and Terminology for TEMPs. In 2013, he received the F04 Joseph Barr Award, which honors physicians who have served with distinction on the committee.

A practicing orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, Lowry was admitted as a fellow to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in 2005. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Missouri in 1996 and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery there in 2001. Lowry is affiliated with Ministry Sacred Heart-St. Mary’s Hospital in Rhinelander, where he serves as chair of the Quality Improvement Committee. Lowry also holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Lowry has published 13 papers and given 23 research or clinical presentations at various scientific and medical meetings all over the country. Outside ASTM, he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Society for Quality and the Wisconsin Orthopedic Society.
