ASTM International Committee D34 on Waste Management has presented the B. Charles Malloy Leadership Award to Brian Schumacher, Ph.D., supervisory physical scientist in the environmental chemistry branch at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Exposure Research Laboratory in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Malloy award, given in memory of Committee D34 founder and past chairman B. Charles Malloy, recognizes exceptional leadership and dedication to waste management standardization and the work of the committee.

Schumacher, who joined ASTM International in 1994, serves as member at large on the D34.90 executive subcommittee and chairs D34.01.03 on Sampling Equipment, part of Subcommittee D34.01 on Monitoring and Characterization. He was honored with a D34 Award of Appreciation in 2001. Schumacher is also a member of Committees D18 on Soil and Rock and D22 on Air Quality.

A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he received a B.A. in geography, Schumacher earned an M.S. and his Ph.D. in soil science from the University of Georgia. He joined the staff at the National Exposure Research Laboratory as environmental scientist in 1991 and assumed his current role in 2000. His primary research focus is on improving the collection of soils contaminated with volatile organic compounds to more accurately and effectively obtain samples that best represent the extent and degree of contamination at any given hazardous waste site.
