Borjen (B.J.) Yeh, Ph.D., P.E., director of the technical services division at APA – The Engineered Wood Association in Tacoma, Wash., has received the Award of Merit for his significant contributions to the development of international standards for ASTM International Committee D07 on Wood. The Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.
A member of ASTM International since 1990, Yeh works on multiple D07 subcommittees and is chairman of D07.02 on Lumber and Engineered Wood Products. He received the D07 L.J. Markwardt Award in 2006 in recognition of his research and standards activities concerning engineered wood products. He is also a member of several other ASTM committees that cover a range of topics, including those on thermal insulation, ceramics, adhesives, plastics, fire standards, buildings, sustainability and floor coverings.
Yeh joined the American Plywood Association (now APA – The Engineered Wood Association) as an associate engineer in 1990 after receiving his doctorate in wood mechanics from the University of California, Berkeley. He was promoted to senior engineer and then manager of research and development before assuming his current role in 2003. He has been a key member of cooperative wood industry projects to develop new standards for wood I-joists, structural composite lumber, cross-laminated timber, engineered wood rimboards, engineered wood siding, structural glued laminated timber and structural insulated panels.
In addition to ASTM International, Yeh is a member of the American National Standards Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Standards Association, the Forest Products Society, the International Code Council, the International Organization for Standardization, the Society of Wood Science and Technology and the Structural Insulated Panel Association.
A registered professional engineer in the state of Washington, Yeh also holds a master’s degree in structural engineering from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, and a bachelor’s in civil engineering from Tamkang University, Taipei, Taiwan.
