Subcommittee D05.21 on Methods of Analysis invites all interested parties to participate in the development of a proposed new standard, WK22936, Test Method for Determination of Sulfur Forms in Coal by ICP-AES. The subcommittee is part of ASTM International Committee D05 on Coal and Coke.

According to Colin Campbell, SaskPower, and D05 member, WK22936 is to be based on D2492, Test Method for Forms of Sulfur in Coal, but will be focused on reducing the required sample sizes. Gravimetric and atomic absorption detection methods used in D2492 will be replaced in the proposed new standard with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy. The proposed standard will also provide an optional means of directly measuring the organic sulfur fraction using high temperature combustion.

The proposed test method would be used in the evaluation of coal preparation and processing operations designed to reduce coal sulfur levels.
