The workshop considers the role of textile standards in the circular economy.

ASTM has published a report on a recent workshop, hosted jointly with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC), on how standards can support a transition to circular textiles.

The workshop covered various areas where standards would be helpful, including sorting and grading; recycling, design for circularity, and more.

The report outlines key points of the workshop and highlights specific standards needs going forward. It concludes with a proposed roadmap of standards work to enable circular textiles, including such steps as design guides, upscaling measures, and labeling standards.

“This workshop brought together many knowledgeable experts from across the textile circularity value chain to present their efforts,” says Kelsea Schumacher, environmental engineer at NIST. “Through deep and interactive discussions, we worked together to identify the necessary standards to accelerate circularity for textiles.”
