Brent E. Stucker, Ph.D., professor and Clark Chair of computer-aided engineering in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky., has received the 2010 Robert J. Painter Award from ASTM International and the Standards Engineering Society.

Administered by ASTM and SES, the Robert J. Painter Award is presented annually to individuals who contribute the most outstanding service to standards development in a given year. Stucker was recognized for his exceptional work in advancing standardization efforts in the field of additive manufacturing.

Stucker was instrumental in the formation of ASTM Committee F42 on Additive Manufacturing in 2009, and he currently serves as the committee's first chairman. Under his leadership, F42 has grown to include more than 100 members from 10 countries.  The committee's first published standard on terminology filled the growing need for standardization of terminology within the additive manufacturing industry in order to streamline communication between additive manufacturing users and producers, educational and research organizations, government agencies, journalists and others.

Before joining the faculty at the University of Louisville this year, Stucker held faculty appointments at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, R.I., and at Utah State University, Logan, Utah.  He was also  a visiting professor at VTT Technical Research Center of Finland.  His research is focused on additive manufacturing technologies and their applications, with a current focus on new materials development for biomedical implants and aerospace/defense structures using ultrasonic consolidation, laser deposition and laser sintering.

Co-author of the textbook Additive Manufacturing Technologies: Rapid Prototyping to Direct Digital Manufacturing, Stucker has authored or co-authored more than 100 technical publications and is a named inventor on six patents.  He has received several awards, including the University of Rhode Island Outstanding Research Award in 2000, the Albert E. Carlotti Faculty Excellence Award in 2001, and the 2005 “Dinosaur Award” from the Selective Laser Sintering Users Group, which recognized his long-term contributions to selective laser sintering technology.

In addition to ASTM International, Stucker is a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and  the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.  He also served as editor for North and South America of the Rapid Prototyping Journal from 2004-2009.  Stucker holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University.
