ASTM International presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Thomas Schlafly for his contributions to its steel, stainless steel, and related alloys committee (A01).
The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities. Schlafly was recognized for 32 years of exceptional service, including a 10-year role as secretary of subcommittee A01.02, which has 175 members across 15 countries.
An ASTM International member since 1992, Schlafly has been previously awarded by A01 with the Award of Appreciation (2006) and the Award of Excellence (2014).
Schlafly has decades of experience in steel construction, and in addition to ASTM, he is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), American Welding Society, AWS, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Research Council on Structural Connections. He currently works as a senior technical liaison for the AISC, a position he’s held since 2017.
Schlafly earned his bachelor of science in civil engineering from Northwestern University in 1976.
