Sam R. Johnson, director, technical services, at Martin Marietta Materials Inc., Raleigh, N.C., has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials.
Established in 1903, Committee D04 oversees more than 200 ASTM International standards related to materials and materials combinations used in flexible pavements; bituminous treated and untreated aggregates; and other materials, products, systems and services incidental to all types of highway and transportation construction and maintenance. D04 has a membership of more than 750 technical experts who make up 29 subcommittees.
A member of ASTM International since 1995, Johnson received the Committee D04 Distinguished Service Award in 2004. He also serves on ASTM Committees C07 on Lime and Limestone and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.
Johnson joined Martin Marietta Materials in 1989 after earning a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University. He started as a management associate and received several promotions with increasing levels of responsibility, including assistant engineer/quality control associate, laboratory manager and manager of technical services. He assumed his current role in 2005.
A registered professional engineer, Johnson is a member of the American Concrete Institute, the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association and the Transportation Research Board.
