ASTM International’s committee on steel, stainless steel, and related alloys (A01) is seeking participants for an interlaboratory study to develop data needed to create a standard for hardness testing.

According to ASTM International member John Griffin, a research engineer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the shear-pin hardness tester described in the proposed standard is already used widely in the foundry, forging, and pipeline industries, but no ASTM International standard currently exists for it. Suppliers and purchasers who rely on shear pin hardness testing to determine hardness will be the primary users of the standard.

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN. The next meeting of ASTM International committee on steel, stainless steel, and related alloys is May 13-16, 2019, in Denver, Colorado, USA.
