ASTM International Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics has presented Stephen Luko, statistician at Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp., in Hartford, Conn., with the ASTM Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow.  The Award of Merit is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

Committee E11 cited Luko “for outstanding contributions and leadership in developing standards related to statistical methods and quality control.”  A member of ASTM International since 1999, he serves as chair of E11 and also leads Subcommittee E11.91 on Planning.  The committee has honored his work in the past with two awards of appreciation.

Luko began his career as a project scientist at Johnson & Johnson in 1981.  He then spent 10 years as a statistician at the Torrington Co., Waterbury, Conn., before joining the staff at Pratt & Whitney in 2001. In addition to his professional work, he has been an adjunct professor in the department of mathematics at Tunxis Community College, Farmington, Conn., since 1989.  

Outside ASTM International, Luko is a member the American Society for Quality, where he is a Certified Quality Engineer and Certified Reliability Engineer, the American Statistical Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He holds a B.S. in mathematics from Charter Oak State College in Connecticut, and an M.A. in mathematics from Central Connecticut State University.
