ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing has honored Werner H. Gumpertz with the 2004 William Cullen Award for his contributions and commitment to Committee D08 and to the field of roofing and waterproofing. Gumpertz, who lives in West Newton, Mass., is a co-founder and senior principal of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. Consulting Engineers in Waltham, Mass.
Gumpertz has been an ASTM International member for more than 40 years, having joined the organization in 1960. In addition to D08, where he serves on several subcommittees and was chair of subcommittee D08.20 for many years, Gumpertz is a member of ASTM Committees C17 on Fiber-Reinforced Cement Products, E06 on Performance of Buildings, and E43 on Metric Practice.
As a consultant for building technology, Gumpertz is experienced with the design of building systems, investigations, construction specifications, and contract reports. In addition, he has investigated, written about, and lectured on roofing, waterproofing, curtain walls, masonry, flooring, building technology, and concrete technology.
Outside ASTM International, Gumpertz is a member of the American Arbitration Association, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Building Research Institute, the Construction Specifier Institute, the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association, the National Academy of Science, the National Roofing Contractors Association, and the U.S. Metric Association.
Gumpertz holds an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, as well as an S.B. in civil engineering and an S.M. in building engineering and construction from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he also earned an advanced professional degree in building engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in eleven states.
