James R. Millette, Ph.D., executive director of MVA Scientific Consultants, Duluth, Ga., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee D22 on Air Quality. The Award of Merit is the highest society award granted to an individual ASTM member for distinguished service and outstanding participation in committee activities.

A member of ASTM International and Committee D22 since 1986, Millette has received the Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow in recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication to the development of ASTM standards for air quality and the identification and analysis of asbestos.

Millette is chairman of ASTM Subcommittee D22.07 on Sampling and Analysis of Asbestos, and he also serves on Committee D24 on Carbon Black.  He has organized and co-chaired several ASTM symposia on asbestos monitoring and surface sampling, and he has received the D22 Award of Appreciation twice, in 2000 and 2010. 

An experienced research scientist in particulate analysis, environmental forensic microscopy and material science, and a recognized expert on the analysis of asbestos in air, dust and other media, Dr. Millette began his career in 1974 as a physical scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was then vice president/general manager of McCrone Environmental Services Inc. in Norcross, Ga., from 1985 to 1990 before joining MVA in 1990.  He has served as instructor of the Young People’s Microscopy Course at the Georgia Microscopical Society since 1991.

A fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Millette is also a member of the Air and Waste Management Association and the Environmental Information Association.  He has produced more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and numerous book chapters and technical reports.

Millette holds a B.S. in physics from the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, an M.En. in environmental science from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and a Ph.D. in environmental science from the University of Cincinnati.
