ASTM International has launched a campaign that strengthens its commitment to serve as the global leader in smart manufacturing standards. This effort builds on the fact that approximately 5,300 experts and 1,500 organizations from 65 countries are already involved in creating ASTM standards that support additive manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, industrial biotechnology, nanotechnology, automation technology and other fields.
The campaign includes two high-profile kickoff events, a new microsite, a special issue of Standardization News magazine, and a new journal launch.
Kickoff Events
On Oct. 2, ASTM co-sponsored a “Manufacturing Day” event featuring U.S. Senator Bob Casey, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, ASTM President James Thomas and other dignitaries. ASTM paid for trips for 250 students to visit local manufacturers to see first-hand how this sector offers good paying, high-skilled jobs. In addition, on Oct. 7, ASTM Executive Vice President Katharine Morgan gave opening remarks at a major conference on additive manufacturing at Pennsylvania State University. This event focused on coordinating standards development in 3D printing.
Smart Manufacturing Microsite
Today, ASTM launched a microsite focused on four actionable ways for people to get involved in smart-manufacturing standards development. At the site, technical experts can explore ASTM’s 10 smart-manufacturing related committees and 50 subcommittees. Also, they can read the latest news, such as an effort launched yesterday to create principles of design rules in additive manufacturing. In addition, they can explore how to get involved in ASTM’s Smart Manufacturing Advisory Committee, a group that coordinates ASTM standards development and forms strategic partnerships in this area.
Standardization News Special Issue: “ASTM Standards Drive Smart Manufacturing”
The November/December issue of Standardization News features stories on 3D printing, pharmaceutical manufacturing and ASTM’s Smart Manufacturing Advisory Committee. The theme issue also includes a smart-manufacturing infographic and a column on the topic by James Thomas. ASTM expanded the magazine’s circulation by 15,000 to include additional experts and leaders in this field.
Call for Papers: Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Journal
With a world-class editorial team and advisory board led by Editor in Chief Dr. Sudarsan Rachuri of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), ASTM is now accepting papers for a new journal: Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems. The publication will support research that crosses the boundaries of information science, systems engineering and engineering design, manufacturing and product life cycle. More information is available at the microsite.
