ASTM International is hosting the Workshop on the Seven Habits for Highly Effective Standards Development, to be held Nov. 2, 2023, at the Washington Hilton, Washington, D.C. (USA). The workshop is sponsored by ASTM’s committee on forensic science (E30). It will be held in conjunction with the November standards development meetings of the committee.

The primary driver for the use of forensic science standards is public welfare and safety. Their primary users are the forensic science community and the legal and criminal justice systems. Forensic results can sometimes be misinterpreted or misapplied. Standards that are specific, well-written, and to which personnel are trained, can aid in decreasing errors.

Developing high-quality, scientifically sound standards is a long and sometimes contentious process. It involves bringing together various stakeholders with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to reach consensus on a given topic. Using Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People as a guide, this workshop will discuss the principles of standards development and provide attendees with information on how they can become more effective in the standards development process. After attending this workshop, participants will:

• Gain a better understanding of the role and importance of consensus-based standard in strengthening forensic science in the United States and internationally,
• Gain a greater awareness of their own individual role in the development of consensus-based standards and,
• Learn how to provide input and get involved.
