ASTM International presented its top annual award – the 2024 Award of Merit – to Seymour Sweet for his contributions to ASTM’s reactive and refractory metals and alloys committee (B10).
The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities. Sweet was recognized for his leadership across committees B10 and F04, significant technical work on all ASTM titanium medical standards, and fostering of compromise over his 25-year length of service at ASTM.
An ASTM International member since 1998, Sweet had been previously honored by committee F04 with the Robert E. Fairer Award (2011).
Sweet is now retired, but he was most recently chief metallurgist for Perryman Company (Houston, PA). His career focus has been on titanium, and in addition to ASTM, he is a member of ASM International (formerly American Society for Metals) and Committee G, Titanium and Refractory Metals Committee of SAE responsible for Aerospace Material Specifications.
Sweet received his bachelor of science degree in metallurgy from Penn State University in 1971.
