Roger Bostelman, engineering project manager with the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, was recently awarded the 2018 ASTM International James A. Thomas President’s Leadership Award. 

The President’s Leadership Award recognizes individuals early in their ASTM International career who have significantly advanced ASTM’s mission through extraordinary accomplishment, example, and vision. The award is given in honor of James A. Thomas, who served as ASTM International president from 1992 to early 2017. It is presented annually to two deserving ASTM International award members. 

A member of ASTM International since 2014, Bostelman was recognized for his outstanding leadership and unusually high productivity in fostering the identification, development, and delivery of high quality, market relevant standards within the ASTM International committees on driverless automatic guided industrial vehicles (F45) and exoskeletons and exosuits (F48). 

Bostelman has been with NIST since 1978. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University, a master’s degree in technology management from the University of Maryland University College, and a doctorate degree in computer science from the University of Burgundy. 

Bostelman’s career focus is in autonomous mobile robots, robotics, and exoskeletons.
