ASTM International’s unmanned aircraft systems committee (F38) has awarded its 2023 Michael Glasgow Award to Andrew Thurling, vice president of airspace innovation at DroneUp, LLC.

Thurling was recognized for his outstanding leadership of committee F38 in bringing government, industry, academia, federally funded research and development centers, and other standards bodies together in his work on standards such as ASTM F3442. This key standard specification addresses detection and avoidance of crewed aircraft, such as crop dusters and light sport aircraft, by uncrewed aircraft in lower-altitude airspace.

Thurling received his Bachelor of Science in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his Master of Science in aeronautical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.

An ASTM International member since 2010, Thurling’s career concentration is aviation and flight testing, and he has held his current position at DroneUp since June 2022. Previously, he was chief technology officer at the Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance, Inc. (NUAIR), where he specialized in research, implementation, and standards surrounding UAS technologies.

In addition to his work at ASTM, he has been a member of several Aviation Rulemaking Committees (ARCs) within the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
